Why you need to do it

  • Let us hope that you never will. The reality is that there are many ways in which a person could lose capacity including brain injury, learning disability or certain physical ailments.
  • The most common way is through dementia
  • There are about 700,000 people in the UK with dementia.
  • Dementia mainly affects older people. However, it can affect younger people: there are 15,000 people in the UK under the age of 65 who have dementia.
  • There will be over a million people with dementia by 2025.
  • Two thirds of people with dementia are women.
  • The proportion of people with dementia doubles for every 5 year age group.
  • One third of people over 95 have dementia.

Are you looking forward to going into a nursing home!!!  Would it not be a good idea to choose a person you trust to make this decision if you are not able to do so yourself. What is more, you do not have to appoint your next of kin or even a family member. Do not assume that all members of your family wll agree with each other.

Let us help you avoid the mess that your loved ones will have to sort out when a terrible financial mess ensues.

You will have made a will to plan for your death but what happens if you lose capacity? Don’t leave it too late. You could lose your capacity in a number of ways.

Sometimes the best way to get your parents / grandparents to plan ahead is to set an example yourself. Tell them that it is something that you think is important and discuss it with them.

What you can do to plan ahead.

You can:

  • Appoint someone to make financial decisions
  • Choose who you want to make personal and welfare decisions about your life such as where you live or medical treatments
  • Choose what medical treatments you would not agree to if you lose capacity
  • Give guidance to those who will make your decisions for you
